Valentine's Day? - A Farm Girl by Tess

Valentine's Day?

Valentine's Day is a time for love, romance, and grand gestures. But for farmers, it's a whole different story. You see, on the farm, making plans for Valentine's Day is like tempting fate. It's like asking for trouble. It's like trying to herd cats (which, by the way, is nearly impossible).

Why don't farmers usually make plans for Valentine's Day?

Well, let me paint you a picture. Imagine this: you and your farmer partner decide to go out for a romantic dinner. You make a reservation at the local restaurant putting on a special, and you even put on your best jeans (because, let's be honest, that's as fancy as it gets on the farm).

But just as you're about to leave, you hear a commotion outside. You rush out to find that one of your sheep has gotten itself stuck in a fence. Now, you can't just leave the poor thing there, can you? So, you spend the next hour trying to free the sheep, all the while your romantic dinner plans are slipping away like a greased pig at the county fair.

What could possibly go wrong?

Oh, where do I begin? Let's see... cows could escape from their pens and go on a joyride. Water fountains could freeze, leaving your animals thirsty and you scrambling to find a solution. And don't even get me started on the unpredictable weather. One minute it's sunny, the next minute it's snowing and sleeting.

And to top it all off, Valentine's Day happens to coincide with the start of Lent this year. That means no meat on the menu. No juicy prime rib or succulent steak. Nope, it's all about the seafood. So, instead of a romantic candlelit dinner, you might find yourself whipping up a batch of shrimp scampi or maybe even some fish tacos (if you're feeling adventurous).

But what about the kids?

Ah, the kids. They're the real wild cards in this whole Valentine's Day equation. Before kids, you and your farmer partner could go out for a nice meal and exchange flowers. But now, it's a whole different ballgame. It's all about making the kids happy.

So, what's on the menu for the little ones? Grilled cheese sandwiches, of course! It's a classic, it's easy to make, and it's guaranteed to put a smile on their faces. Who needs fancy food when you can have gooey, melty cheese between two slices of buttery bread?

What are some of your Valentine's Day traditions?

Now, I've shared my Valentine's Day adventures on the farm, but I want to hear from you. What are some of your Valentine's Day traditions? Do you have any quirky or unusual stories to share? I'd love to hear about them in the comments below.

And remember, even if your Valentine's Day plans don't go exactly as planned (which, let's face it, they probably won't), the most important thing is to cherish the moments with your loved ones. Whether you're wrangling sheep, chasing after cows, or simply enjoying a grilled cheese sandwich with your family, love is all around.
